mediocre minds great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.

[E]veryone just wants bigger numbers. As the researchers found, it doesn't even matter if those numbers don't line up with personal experience, or even if they're completely made up.

From "Shoppers are suckers for stats—even when they're meaningless", an ArsTechnica article that talks about a study that shows a shocking lack of expertise (and willingness to obtain relevant knowledge) among consumers.

Robocop on a Unicorn for President

You may be wondering who Mediocre Minds endorses for President in this upcoming election. (I have personally received several emails from high-level senators and senatorial aids asking just this question.) Well, after considering all the facts, we have come to a decision.

Robocop and Unicorn for President

Olav Rokne's Flickr set entitled "Robocop on a Unicorn" contains this gem, asking us to vote for Robocop on a Unicorn for President this November. And when you think about it... doesn't that make a lot of sense? Wouldn't Robocop be tough on crime and terrorism? Wouldn't Unicorn take care of working class families and their problems?

Vote for Robocop on a Unicorn... unless you're not patriotic.

New Star Trek Movie Photos

Star Trek Crew

TrekMovie has a few new photos of the new Star Trek movie. All in all, I'd say the cast looks pretty spot-on.

I'm not sure I buy Chris Pine's Kirk look, but I understand it will depend more on the acting than on just still shots. Zachary Quinto (Sylar, for all you Heroes fans) seems to be a good Spock.

All in all, these photos don't anger the Trekker inside of me (yes, he's still there... just somewhat deadened by the last decade or so). And that's probably the best thing I've had to say about Star Trek in a while... "Hey, at least this doesn't suck yet."

[I]t uses time travel sparingly. It uses it very much the way the first Terminator used it: as a basis for the plot, as opposed to an active element in the plot.

Director Rian Johnson on his new movie, Looper. You may know Johnson from the awesome high-school noir film Brick. I'm absolutely in.
